Kalamkari translates to Penwork or brushwork. Kalamkari work is one of the main traditional works of India and is represented in many art forms of the country, even today such as heritage fibres and paintings. The exclusive characteristic of a Kalamkari shawl would definitely be the fine details and the careful mix of colours in this intricate hand-drawn pen art. What is special about Kashmiri Kalamkari work is that when done Over a Pashmina Shawl, it is later hand embroidered in multicoloured threads to make the motifs more prominent and beautiful.

Sozni is one of the most sophisticated forms of needle embroidery in the world. This extremely fine, delicate and artistic needle work is only practiced in Kashmir and has no parallels anywhere else. This work of art is created when an Artisan holds a needle and thread in his/her hand. His/her skill, talent, hard work, and expertise are directly shown on this shawl making you feel regal and unique. The embroidery stitches are so fine that sometimes it’s difficult to distinguish between the front and back.

In Kashmir, art is a way of expression and these shawls reflect India’s true heritage. Kashmir is India’s valley of dreams and is famous for ancient craftsmanship and beautiful handwoven designs.

Please take note:
This is a purely handmade product. The imperfections in the weave give it character and uniqueness. This is not a mass-produced garment but is a labor of love and by wearing it we preserve an art form. These pieces are traditionally handwoven in villages in Kashmir, India and you are lending a living to these artisans. The colours in the picture are very close to the true colours but may not be 100% exact due to photographic lighting.
